Migrant Labor Camp Program
The Iowa Department of Public Health Migrant Labor Camp Program permits operators providing housing to seven or more migrant agricultural workers. Migrant labor is defined as any person (including their family) who travels from state to state for the purpose of seasonal employment in agriculture. Employers that will be providing housing to migrant agricultural workers shall comply with the requirements of Iowa Code Chapter 138 and 641 IAC Chapter 81, General Rules for Migratory Labor Camps.
How do I apply for a permit?
To apply for a Migrant Labor Camp Permit operators will need to submit a completed Application for Permit to Operate a Migrant Labor Camp at least 60 days in advance of occupancy with a camp diagram for each floor of the building that will be utilized for migrant agricultural workers that includes the identification of each building, the identification and use of every room, the room dimensions, the location and identification of beds/cots/bunks, toilets/urinals, sinks/wash basins, showers, laundry tub/machines, and fire escape routes. There is no fee for the permit.
How long is the permit valid?
Once a completed Application for Permit to Operate a Migrant Labor Camp has been submitted, the Migrant Labor Camp Program has 30 days to review the information and issue a permit. The permit is good for one year from the date of issuance and is not transferable if there is a change in operator or if it is revoked.
